Key Note Speaker: Better Housing Coalition Ground Breaking 2025

I had the pleasure of speaking at the ground breaking ceremony for the Colbrook Community in Chesterfield County, a new affordable housing community developed by the Better Housing Coalition. This site used to be the location of the Colbrook Motel, which was listed in the Negro Motorist Greenbook.

In my remarks, I talked about the fact that if we don't stand up to protect our history, we leave the door open for anyone to misinterpret or even lie about it. We open the door to misunderstanding ourselves and where we've been, and if we do that, we miss the opportunity to learn from the past.

The Colbrook Community will be truly affordable. They're not relying on vouchers, and will offer services to residents that include mental health help. This is the type of community building we need to be doing, and I'm so honored I could be a part of it.
